When the Army of the Cumberland announced their 1885 reunion would be held in Grand Rapids, the Kent County Soldeirs’ Monument Association secured funds to erect a memorial. The memorial was dedicated on September 17, 1885, as part of the reunion’s festivities. The monument was the first in the country to include a built-in fountain, and the first in the commemorate the role women played in the Civil War. The monument and fountain were renovated and repaired in 1959, and underwent a major restoration, competed in 2003.
