great parks make great neighborhoods

The Friends of Grand Rapids Parks is an independent, citizen led, nonprofit enterprise founded in 2008, working closely with but separate from the city. Our mission is to identify specific park projects, mobilize people, and generate resources to protect, enhance, and expand the city's parks and public spaces.

Classified as a Neighborhood Park it serves as the recreational and social focus of the neighborhood.

A former brickyard, the Midtown site was purchased in 1906 by Alfred Baxter, who founded the Baxter Laundry Co. in 1876. Baxter used the Fountain & Eastern site to expand his operation with a two-story building. After burning to 1975, the City cleared the site. In the 1980’s, neighbors rallied to form the Midtown Neighborhood Assoc. and converted the vacant lot to the park.
