In the Trees Book Club Recap

Friends’ In the Trees Book Club started as a response to lockdown and quarantine during the spring of 2020. With the new COVID-19 restrictions, we wanted to find safe and accessible ways to reach out to our amazing friends of Friends.

It’s our goal to create a safe space to discuss important topics that directly connect to our mission and vision (i.e. environmental justice, equity, trees, intersectionality, etc.). In the Trees is a great opportunity to move our mission forward through conversation, connection, and good, old-fashioned chit chatting.

Our January 2021 book selection was The Biophilia Effect: A Scientific and Spiritual Exploration of the Healing Bond Between Humans and Nature by Clemens Arvay. This fascinating book delved into the science behind the healing power of nature.

Friend’s mission and vision is directly connected to Arvay’s thesis. Being able to plant trees, uplift our community, and be in nature provides innumerable holistic and therapeutic benefits. Friends’ vision to actively support the community’s economic, environmental, and cultural health is directly connected to the biophilia effect.

Save the date for the next book club meeting: March 25! We will be discussing Rooted in the Earth: Reclaiming the African American Environmental Heritage by Dianne D. Glave. Glave delves into the African American experience of nature through a historic and sociological lens. This book discusses the culture’s rich environmental heritage and much more. We can’t wait to discuss this groundbreaking and important piece of environmental literature with you soon.

We are always looking for book recommendations and want to hear from you. If you have friends or family interested in joining In the Trees book club, please invite them! They can sign up here, or simply join us for the virtual meeting. ALL are welcome.

Meet our book club leader

Claire works to recruit, organize, and care for our volunteers – our largest group of supporters! Outside the office, you can bet your bottom dollar she’s playing her “guit-fiddle” or hanging with her pup Betty Midler. Meet her on the blog!
