Tips for Hiking Park Trails

November 17 is National Hiking Day, so this month we are highlighting hiking on trails in our parks as a way to get outside and connect with nature. So here are some tips for getting out on the trails!

where to go and how to get there:

  • We created a short list of easy hikes for first timers that are also great for more experienced adventurers. Check it out!
  • Visit Experience GR for a list of other trails to visit all around Kent County
  • Download the AllTrails app to challenge yourself even more opportunities around the area and throughout the country.
  • Many of our trails are on bus lines in Grand Rapids

Second – safety:

  • Hike with a buddy!
  • Going after dark? Do not leave home without a headlamp, a flashlight, or a phone with a flashlight to guide you.
  • If you go alone, always tell someone where you are going before you head out.

Third – gear:

  • You don’t need any fancy gear to go for a hike – you probably have most of what you need!
  • Bring a water bottle to stay hydrated, even in cooler months.
  • Wear comfortable shoes or boots with good tread.
  • Dress in layers, including a hat and gloves because when the sun goes down it gets cool fast in Michigan.
  • Wear a fanny pack, small backpack or sling bag to hold your phone and keys, keeping your hands free.
