Update on our Citizen Forester Program

Happy New Year!

We would like to take this opportunity to thank you once again for your continued support of our urban forest and community. Here at Friends, our vision is thriving parks and a sustainable urban forest that actively supports our community’s economic, environmental, and cultural health. None of this would be possible without the amazing work that happens within our communities to make that vision a reality.

Friends of Grand Rapids Parks works in partnership with the city of Grand Rapids to engage our whole community in planting and growing a larger, healthier, more vibrant urban forest. One of the greatest accomplishments of Friends of Grand Rapids Parks’ Urban Forest Project has been the Citizen Forester Program. Launched in 2013 to provide volunteers with the skills and knowledge to advance trees in their own communities, the goal of the program is to develop an engaged group of active, trained volunteers and community leaders that assist with, initiate, advocate for, and advise on community-based urban forest projects and initiatives. However these expert volunteers choose to share their skills, they play an intricate role in the health of our urban forest, and the work of our organization would be incomplete without this support.

In all Friends of Grand Rapids Parks initiatives, we strive to perform as an inclusive organization. Beginning this month (January 2019), the Citizen Forester program will change its name to the Neighborhood Forester program. The program and its values and work will remain unchanged, and all individuals who have completed the program requirements will retain their status. The goal of this name change is to open doors to any and all people in our communities who hold a passion and interest in their trees and urban forest, regardless of their background.

So, Neighborhood Foresters, we are eager to have you join us in 2019 as we continue to pursue a happier, healthier, and greener Grand Rapids! Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions regarding the program. See you soon!
