Join us at Mulick and Richmond Parks this winter!

Friends of Grand Rapids Parks knows that parks can be fun year round, but it’s all too easy to burrow inside and avoid the fresh air until the spring thaw arrives! With this is mind, FGRP is offering two signature events guaranteed to get your family outside and into our City parks this winter! The Mulick Park Snow Fest brings free winter activities to the South East End, while WinterWest returns to the Westside with the classic Adults and Kids Crazy Cardboard Sled Races!

Keeping parks active year round helps to engage neighbors and keep neighborhoods social, even when the winter blues come knocking. And, while these events benefit park users and nature users, they also benefit the parks themselves! Active parks tend to attract more users, which in turn helps to grow a diverse system of park users across our City. Often times parks go dormant in the winter and can feel empty, making it easier for passersby to leave trash and mess where it is instead of picking it up. But, most importantly, our parks were built to be used and so many of our City parks have awesome natural features that make winter so much more fun! As Executive Director Tracey said, “We at Friends of GR Parks happen to love winter and are deeply passionate about creating a parks system that is vibrant and alive with activity year-round. Both Mulick and Richmond Parks have the perfect landscape to showcase all the fun that can be had in Grand Rapids parks in the snow.”

Mulick Park Snow Fest
At the Mulick Park Snow Fest on January 28, participants will enjoy sledding, snowman building, a crash course in snowshoeing from Blandford Nature Center, a warming tent with free snacks and hot chocolate, and more. The event is free to attend and no registration is necessary. Participants are encouraged to bundle up and to bring a sled to join the sledding fun! This event is presented in partnership with Kent County Health Connect through the REACH (Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health) initiative, which is funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

7th Annual WinterWest at Richmond Park
WinterWest is back on February 12 for a day of Westside winter fun!  The event includes Crazy Cardboard Sled Races for kids and adults, crafts in the warming lodge, a winter tree ID & education walk, and more. Local food trucks will also be at the event this year. The event is free to attend and registration is recommended, but not required, for the Crazy Cardboard Sled Races. WinterWest is presented in partnership with the City of Grand Rapids Parks and Recreation Department, Grand Rapids Public Schools, and the West Grand Neighborhood Association and sponsored by Long Road Distillers and West Michigan Credit Union.
