We Are Friends Spotlight on Neighborhood Liaison Yiovanny Cornejo

This is the fourth in a series of monthly profiles featuring the many people–staff, Board members, volunteers and more–who, together, are Friends of Grand Rapids Parks.

As we head into park clean-up and tree planting season, our volunteers can plan on seeing a whole lot of this guy. As our neighborhood and community liaison, Yiovanny is constantly out in the field, meeting with neighbors, directing volunteers at park clean-ups, helping set up for Movies in the Park, and more.

A Grand Rapids native, Yiovanny joined Friends of Grand Rapids Parks in the spring of 2014. Previously, Yiovanny worked for LINC Community Revitalization as a Natural Helper.

As the parent of four children, Yiovanny has been very active in Grand Rapids Public Schools. Through his involvement in his kids’ education and involvement with GRPS, he discovered his passion for youth and community activism.

Yiovanny has a strong passion for the youth in his community and understands the importance of green spaces in urban communities. You can find Yiovanny around town at the youth soccer fields and throughout Grand Rapids advocating for parks and green spaces.

“As a Community Liaison for Friends, I get the best of both worlds, I spend a lot of time enjoying the parks and nature and I get to have meaningful interactions with the community and creating opportunities for the youth,” he said.
