Internship Position Available for Immediate Hire

Position: Communications and Marketing Intern

Compensation: Unpaid (but rich in experience!)

Reports to: Program Coordinator

Hours: 10-20 per week

Location: Grand Rapids, MI

Welcome to Friends of Grand Rapids Parks! Friends of Grand Rapids Parks (FGRP) is a small 501(c)3 nonprofit location in the North Monroe Business District in Grand Rapids, Michigan. We are an independent, citizen led, enterprise founded in 2008 that works closely with but separate from the City. Our mission is to identify specific park projects, mobilize people, and generate resources to protect, enhance, and expand the city’s parks and public spaces. We make projects happen by bringing together neighbors, park users, contractors, the city, funders, and volunteers!

We are small team of five and we are looking for an intern who is committed to each task and passionate about our work. We value a sense of humor, a highly developed work ethic, and an interest in nonprofits.

Position Summary:

The Communications and Marketing Intern will work in our office to assist staff in developing communications language, marketing materials, and other communications needs. The primary focus of this internship will be assisting the Executive Director in developing written materials for the 2015 Annual Report.

Expected Educational Outcomes:

  • Broad and deep understanding of nonprofit structure and day to day operations
  • Develop and enhance the communications strategies and materials for FGRP
  • Create and retain portfolio pieces (flyers, reports, etc.) for future employment
  • Experience and connections with local design firms

Position Details: 

This spring, FGRP will release an annual report summarizing our progress in 2015 and highlighting opportunities for programmatic and funding advancements. This report will be focus of the Communications and Marketing Intern. You will help to:

  • Gather and summarize data into clear and compelling writing
  • Research content for the report and compile reasoning for including or excluding content pieces
  • Write content pieces on various programs, funding, and staff accomplishments
  • Work with a graphic designer to create the layout and design theme of the report
  • Edit writing for content and grammar, as needed

In addition to the Annual Report, the intern will assist staff with office tasks such as:

  • Writing blog posts for the FGRP website
  • Writing Facebook posts advertising upcoming events
  • Editing staff writing as needed (reports, flyers, presentations) for content and grammar

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate would have at minimum one year of experience in professional writing, advertising, or a related college major. This candidate would be familiar with Publisher and WordPress and have advanced skills in Microsoft Word and Excel. Finally, this candidate would have direct experience in providing written content for reports, brochures, and flyers.

Expectations:

FGRP values flexibility in our internship program. This means that you will be held to a range of hours, between 10-20 per week, depending on your course load and other commitments outside of this internship. The days and hours an intern works can be adjusted to fit any schedule throughout the internship but FGRP recommends preparing for at least 10 hours a week to complete the tasks of this internship.

The intern will not be expected to travel or work outside of our office but the intern must have transportation (public or private) to and from our office.
