GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — A total of eight Grand Rapids neighborhood parks will get makeovers in order to make them more family-friendly.

Construction is expected to begin next week at the following parks: Cherry, Fuller, Garfield, Highland, Lincoln, Roosevelt, Westown Commons and Wilcox.

According to city officials, the type of improvements will vary at each park but the reconstruction plans include replacing or restoring restrooms, drinking fountains and playgrounds.

Six of the parks will also get new water playgrounds, or splash pads.

Improvements range from playground expansion to the installation of rain gardens, walking paths, path lighting, benches, improved green space, hard surface courts and fields, and new tree plantings.

Construction completion dates vary for each park, with the new amenities slated for use in mid-August.

Revenue generated from the voter-approved parks millage, approved in November 2013, will fund the various park improvements.
