5th Annual WINTERWEST RETURNS TO GR’S WEST SIDE WITH CRAZY CARDBOARD SLED RACE AND HOCKEY AT TWO PARKS

Popular event on Grand Rapids’ West Side returns with an exciting twist

Grand Rapids, Mich. – The 5th annual WinterWest event is coming back to Richmond Park from January 23-25. WinterWest is an event that encourages people and families to get out and enjoy winter in our parks.

With the migration of WGRD’s Pond Hockey Classic from Reeds Lake to Richmond Park, the organizers of WinterWest are collaborating with WGRD to focus all events on the weekend of January 23-25, instead of having the WinterWest event run for three weekends as in past years.

One of the most popular parts of the event is the Crazy Cardboard Sled Race sponsored by Grand Rapids Public Schools which will take place on Sunday, January 25 at 2:00 pm. This year there will be two divisions – a FAMILY division, and a CORPORATE division. As always, the FAMILY registration is free.  Registration and additional info for the event can be found at the WinterWest Facebook page or www.friendsofgrparks.org.

The warming shelter will be open during normal hours where hot chocolate and coffee will be available. The event is made possible by donations from: OST, Rockford Construction, Swift Printing, Long Road Distillers, and Chemical Bank. These sponsors have made WinterWest possible and also have provided the funds for rinks in three GR Parks.

“We look forward to seeing the crazy sleds that families and companies create not to mention the opportunity to have hockey available at both the Richmond Park Pond as well as Lincoln Park with the rink. The West Side will definitely be the place to be!” – Michael Lomonaco, Marketing Director at OST and WinterWest committee member.

“WinterWest has served as a catalyst to bring people to our parks during all four seasons. We are excited to now have rinks available in three of our city parks as well as pond hockey available at Richmond Park. WinterWest is one of those events that helps our community imagine the endless possibilities thriving parks can to do strengthen neighborhoods.” – Steve Faber, Executive Director of Friends of GR Parks.
