WinterWest Returns

GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. (WOOD) — The 5th annual WinterWest festival will return to Grand Rapids this weekend with a few changes.

Instead of having WinterWest run for three weekends like it has in the past, this year organizers have moved the event into one weekend from Jan. 23-25 at Richmond Hills Park, located at 1732 Tamarack Avenue NW.

WinterWest has partnered with WGRD’s Pond Hockey Classic and 45 teams are expected to compete in the event.

Opening ceremonies for the Pond Hockey Classic begin at 5:45 p.m. Friday, with the first games starting at 6 p.m. at Richmond Pond. Games are scheduled throughout the weekend with the championship game taking place Sunday afternoon.

One of the most popular parts of the event is the Crazy Cardboard Sled Race which will happen at 2 p.m. Sunday. There are two divisions — a family division which is free and a corporate division which is $35/team. Those who want to participate can register for the race at the WinterWest Facebook page or www.friendsofgrparks.org.

The warming shelter will also be open during normal hours where hot chocolate and coffee will be available.

WinterWest encourages people and families to get out and enjoy winter at Grand Rapids parks.
