‘Grease’ brings doo-wop downtown as Movies in the Park series continues

GRAND RAPIDS, MI – Classic cars, dancing, and a movie that features both are coming downtown as ‘Grease’ is next up for the free Movies in the Park series presented by Downtown Grand Rapids Inc. and Friends of Grand Rapids Parks. The series, sponsored by Celebration! Cinema, features movies shown on an inflatable, three-story screen at Ah-Nab-Awen Park, 220 Front Ave. NW.

Pre-show activities start at 7 p.m. on Friday, June 20 with The Grand Rapids Antique Car Club showcasing classic cars and the Grand Rapids Original Swing Society offering swing dancing lessons to the public. The Grand Rapids Children’s Museum will also have a playground available for kids and families.

John Travolta and Olivia Newton John star in the 1978 movie about a cast of characters from the graduating class of Rydell High School. Set in the ’50s, the film’s soundtrack was one of the biggest selling albums of that year with songs like “Greased Lightning,” “You’re The One That I Want,” and “Hopelessly Devoted to You.”

The public is invited make it “dinner and a movie” by bringing food or supporting the local food vendors on site including: GoNuts, What the Truck, Daddy Pete’s BBQ, Woking Taco, Vito’s Pizza, Dorothy and Tony’s Gourmet Kettle Corn, Ferris Coffee, and Spoonlickers.

This is the second of six movie nights in the series that carry the theme of “Films Through Time” as each represents different decades from the ‘40s through the ‘90s.

The movies are:

• June 6: Raiders of the Lost Ark (1940s)

• June 20: Grease (1950s)

• July 11: Dreamgirls (1960s)

• July 25: The Rocky Horror Picture Show (1970s)

• August 8: Top Gun (1980s)

• August 22: Double Feature: Voters’ Choice and Jurassic Park (1990s)

Voting for the final film to be shown as the Voters’ Choice movie will close on July 11. Votes can be cast at www.downtowngr.org.

Wine and beer are allowed but no hard liquor is permitted. IDs will be checked and wristbands will be given to those over 21.Children under 15 must be accompanied by an adult. Founder’s Brewing Co. is the Title Sponsor for the night and the Grand Rapids Bicycle Coalition will be the evening’s Community Partner.
