Do you like people, parks, and trees? Friends of Grand Rapids Parks (FGRP) is looking to hire an program manager to help support and expand FGRP’s signature programs; Parks Alive (PA), Urban Forest Project (UFP), and park planning in neighborhoods currently deficient in quality open space and urban forest canopy. Throughout the year, FGRP hosts numerous workshops, volunteer opportunities, and community events across the city. You’ll help support our efforts by engaging and expanding outreach to diverse communities, developing new partnerships and programs, recruiting and coordinating volunteers, and helping Grand Rapids communities to envision possibilities and develop plans to protect, enhance, and expand their parks, trees, and public spaces.

Primary Objectives:

  • Outreach and engagement to foster new and existing partnerships between FGRP, community groups, organizations, and citizens. Create new opportunities, materials, and initiatives to support and encourage diverse neighborhood and citizen participation in FGRP programs and projects.
  • Project planning and development to assist neighborhoods and communities in envisioning, planning, and designing improvements to existing parks or new park development. Connect or help neighbors find resources to accomplish their goals, improve access to parks and trees, and provide input to the City.
  • Help to recruit, coordinate, and lead volunteers to complete community based projects such as park clean-ups, tree planting, tree care, installation of new equipment, mulching, weeding or planting, painting, and associated activities
  • Special Event Support to help plan, attend, and support special events such as fund-raisers, membership meetings, and related activities.
  • Identify program models that have been effective in other cities and determine viability in Grand Rapids by creating new workshop and speaker series.
  • Kick around the office and help with other duties as necessary to help FGRP get great things done.


  • Hold a degree in social work, public administration, parks/recreation, landscape architecture or related field –AND- have 3+ years of experience engaging diverse communities, coordinating volunteer based projects and leadership, and facilitating community led partnerships –OR- any combination of education or experience leading to the desired skills and qualifications.
  • Have experience and comfort with coordinating or managing multiple projects with varied partners and critical- sometimes tight- deadlines.
  • Have demonstrated community or organizational leadership qualities. Skills and experience in facilitating public meetings is desirable.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency, and are competent or fluent in the Spanish language.
  • Don’t mind working outside in a variety of weather conditions, getting dirty, performing manual labor, and otherwise supporting volunteers to accomplish projects.
  • Are well organized, detail-oriented, motivated, and have strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Enjoy working with the world’s best volunteers, exceptional staff, and amazing partners.

Reports to: Executive Director
Hours: 40+ hours/week. Occasional evenings/weekends as required
Salary/Rate: $35,000

The Friends of Grand Rapids Parks is an independent, citizen led, nonprofit enterprise founded in 2008, working closely with but separate from the City, with the mission to identify specific park projects, mobilize people, and generate resources to protect, enhance, and expand the City’s parks and public spaces. In a nutshell, we make park improvement projects happen by bringing together neighbors, park users, the City, funders, volunteers and contractors.
