Green Gala 2013: StellaFly

The Third Annual Green Gala was held August 22, 2013, at Fish Ladder Park. The Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, a citizen driven nonprofit, hosts the annual Gala as a fundraiser for continuing its mission to protect and enhance the parks in the City.

The idea of sustainability, or being “green” was embodied throughout the event, from the use of local products and the opportunity to sponsor a tree, to the green-colored clothing of attendees. Bins labeled for recycling, compost, or landfill were put around the park for guests to dispose of all cups, napkins, plates and food, all of which were 100 percent compostable. These sustainability ideas not only acted as a learning tool for how to live a “green” life, but put the Gala in the running to be carbon neutral, like the 2012 fundraiser.

While enjoying the local beers and Michigan wines, guests were invited to take part in the silent auction or get their picture taken at the photo wall with props such as a green boa or gardening tools. Food was from the Starving Artist, highlighting foods from Michigan’s current harvest, such as kale, tomatoes, and corn.

Guests continued their evening with desserts and music from Fauxgrass, a bluegrass band, which tours mainly throughout the Midwest and Michigan. The 2013 Green Gala was a sure success, with people dancing and celebrating into the evening, all in support of the Grand Rapids’ parks.
