East Hills Wins 10 Trees!

East Hills has a history of supporting its urban trees. For this reason, the Friends of Grand Rapids Parks (FGRP) chose it as a neighborhood to pilot their tree mapping program when it launched in August. In October, FGRP challenged East Hills Council of Neighbors to map as many trees as possible in two weeks. To sweeten the deal, FGRP promised 5 trees to be planted if 100 trees were mapped, or 10 trees to be planted if the neighbors mapped a total of 200 trees.

On October 20th, the East Hills Council of Neighbors met at Mangiamo’s to launch their official “Mapathon”. While they were unable to map 200 trees at Mangiamos, a couple of dedicated residents continued mapping throughout the end of October. By close of business on October 31st, East Hills had mapped a total of 215 trees, more than enough to earn them 10 trees to be planted in public spaces of their choosing.

This is just one unique example of an exciting way to promote trees throughout your community. The Tree Map is an inviting and interacting way to get your neighbors to interact with, and consider the importance of your Neighborhood’s urban forest.
