Volunteers build kids’ fitness area at MLK Park

GRAND RAPIDS (WZZM) — Grand Rapids children are getting a new place to break a sweat.

Volunteers began piecing together a dozen workout centers at Martin Luther King Jr. Park Friday.

The project is being paid for by a three-year grant from Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan to Project Fit, which is aimed at battling childhood obesity.

“We really see that this could be a really great fit for some of the other programming that’s happening here,” says Steve Faber of Friends of Grand Rapids Parks. “The pool, all those sorts of pieces. And that’s part of why having the community come out too its really their outdoor gym so to speak and so its great that they’re able to help volunteer and work on the project. And hopefully that means they’ll take care of it and be the primary users of it.”

Volunteers will wrap up construction on the center on Saturday.

A second fitness space will be built at Roosevelt Park later this summer.
