10 Day Campaign for Pools!

Inspired by Bob Sullivan’s dedication to open Richmond Park
Pool, Friends of Grand Rapids Parks and the City of Grand Rapids have launched
an ambitious 10 day campaign to raise $175,000 to open 2 additional pools for
the 2010 summer – Martin Luther King Park Pool and Briggs Park Pool.

Until just a few days ago, the assumption was that the pools
were still part of the 2010 city budget.
But the recent decision to not institute the Street Light Utility put
the pool funding into jeopardy.  On
Tuesday evening, the City Commission approved $169,000 to open the 2 pools for
7 weeks if the community can meet the $175,000 challenge by June 4th.

We are asking the community to come to the table one more
time to make an investment in quality of life in our neighborhoods.  Closed pools will have a negative
impact on our community, and the over 41,000 visitors that make these 3 pools
part of their summer ritual.

However, we are overdue in constructing a viable plan and funding strategy for pools.  Friends of GR Parks and the City have committed to assembling community leadership to develop a better business plan to maintain these valuable community assets while improving quality.  This work begins immediately.
