Friends of Grand Rapids Parks believes in the power of volunteering and playing outside to unlock the powerful benefits of nature-connection.
Our Story
Rooted in Purpose
In 2007, a group of Grand Rapids neighbors came together to respond to budget cuts that led to declining park maintenance. They mobilized volunteers to provide vital park maintenance to keep park spaces available for the community and founded Friends of Grand Rapids Parks.
Over the years, Friends has expanded our programming to address more than park maintenance. Today, we work in partnership with the city’s thriving parks department, mobilizing volunteers to engage in park stewardship, conservation, trail maintenance, and urban forestry programs.
Ultimately, the purpose of Friends of Grand Rapids Parks remains rooted in the values that united us in 2007—the commitment to stewardship and protection of green and wild spaces around the city.
Our Mission & Vision
At Friends of Grand Rapids Parks, we are passionate about growing community through nature. We envision Grand Rapids as a thriving, nature-connected city in which all residents are engaged in our shared green spaces. We partner with the community to plant trees, restore park habitats, build trails, and explore all the unique recreational opportunities in Grand Rapids’ parks.
We’re expanding access to nature by developing and maintaining trails throughout Grand Rapids. We’re expanding access to nature by developing and maintaining trails throughout Grand Rapids.
